Laying the foundation
Chiropractic care is like building a house - certain things have to happen in a particular order in order for everything to stand strong and work correctly. When building a house, if you tried to put up your walls before you had a solid foundation, your walls would be weak and eventually collapse. If you tried to put on your roof before the walls were ready, you would run into the same problem. The same is true for your body. Your body has to go through a particular plan of care in order to repair itself correctly and fully. There are three general phases of chiropractic care . . .
Phase 1: Relief Care
If you are in pain when you come into our office, the first objective is to help you feel better. Gentle, hands-on adjustments and supportive physiotherapy procedures are used to correct spinal misalignments and restore normal motion to the problem area. Depending on the severity of your problem, it is typical to need care 2-3 times per week and may require several weeks of treatment.
Phase 2: Corrective/Rehabilitative Care
During this phase of care, the muscles and other tissues continue to adapt to the improved spinal funtioning that began during the relief phase of care. Spinal adjustments coupled with specific exercises and stretches are incorporated into your individualized care plan. The time between office visits is often decreased to 1-2 times per week and several weeks of treatment may be necessary. The greatest amount of postural improvement and spinal stability are experienced within this treatment period.
Phase 3: Wellness Care
Once your body has fully healed, it is important to maintain the optimum functioning of your spinal column. Regular spinal adjustments and continued posture/balance exercises will help keep your body functioning at its peak. Additionally, healthy lifestyle modifications including stress reduction, proper rest and good nutrition assist in this process. We have found over the years that the patients that have embraced these principles are sick less often and experience fewer spinal problems.
